Two Options Beat Fifty: Why Chef Drago Ends With a Duel

Bang bang chicken rice bowl

Short version: when you are tired and hungry, comparing fifty recipes is exhausting, but choosing between two is easy. That is why Chef Drago ends every round the same way: as soon as two recipes are on your shortlist, they face off in a duel, and you tap the one you would rather eat.

The problem with fifty options

Search “easy dinner” and you get thousands of results. Even a good recipe site shows you dozens per page. Each one is a small comparison to make: time, ingredients, effort, mood. After a long day, that is a lot of small decisions, and the easiest way out is often to make none of them and order food.

Psychologists have a name for this: choice overload. A well-known experiment from 2000 found that shoppers offered 6 flavours of jam were more likely to buy than shoppers offered 24 (Iyengar & Lepper, 2000). The effect is real but not universal: a later analysis of many studies found that it depends a lot on the situation, and is strongest when people are unsure what they want and the options are hard to compare (Scheibehenne, Greifeneder & Todd, 2010).

“Unsure what I want, and too many hard-to-compare options” is a pretty good description of 7 pm on a Tuesday.

How the duel fixes it

  1. One recipe at a time. The swipe deck never shows you a list. Each card is a single yes-or-no question.
  2. Two finalists. As soon as you have said yes twice, the deck stops and the two recipes face each other.
  3. One tap. You choose the one you would rather eat. No scoring, no spreadsheets. The winner gets cooked, the loser goes back in the fridge.

It also makes deciding a little bit fun, which matters more than it sounds. Drago has opinions about every finalist.

Try the duel yourself

You can play a round right now, without installing anything: the deck on the home page works exactly like the one in the app. Then read how Chef Drago works or what makes a good recipe swiping app.
